A milestone anniversary, a family journey to Ireland and a deeply personal ceremony created around decades of love.
Some ceremonies mark the beginning of a marriage.
Others offer a chance to pause after decades of life together, look at everything you have shared and say once again:
“I still choose you.”
When John and Kathy travelled to Ireland with their family, they decided to celebrate their milestone wedding anniversary with a vow renewal.
It was never meant to be an enormous or elaborate occasion. What mattered was creating something personal: a ceremony that reflected the life they had built together and could be shared with the people who knew their story best.
I was deeply honoured to be asked to create and lead that ceremony.
For me, a personal ceremony begins long before the day itself.
It begins with listening.
During my conversation with John and Kathy, I took the time to learn about their marriage, their family and the experiences that had brought them to this particular moment in Ireland.
The aim was not to recount every year or every event. It was to find the small, meaningful details that made their story unmistakably theirs, and to weave those details into a ceremony filled with warmth, love and sincerity.
“Hiring Áine to perform the ceremony was the best decision we made. She took the time to truly get to know us, and after our interview, she wove our story together in the most concise and loving way. Every word felt personal and heartfelt.”
— John
Those words mean a great deal to me because that is precisely what I hope every couple experiences.
A vow renewal should never feel like a standard script with different names inserted.
It should sound like you.
It should reflect the life you have lived together, the family you have created, the difficult days you have weathered and the countless ordinary moments that gradually became a shared lifetime.
A family vow renewal is centred on the couple, but its meaning often extends far beyond them.
Children and other family members have witnessed the marriage from their own unique perspective. They have grown up within its story, shared its traditions and watched the relationship change and deepen over the years.
John and Kathy’s daughter Sarah shared the celebration with her Instagram community afterwards.
“Watching them renew their vows is a memory I’ll cherish forever.”
Sarah’s description of the ceremony was especially moving:
“Áine was absolutely incredible. She was so kind, so genuine, and somehow made it feel like she’d known our family forever. She created such a heartfelt and personal ceremony that made the entire day even more meaningful.”
There can be no greater compliment for a celebrant than hearing that a family felt genuinely known.
My role is not simply to arrive and read a ceremony. It is to create a space in which people can relax, laugh, remember and be fully present with one another.
On that day, the ceremony belonged not only to John and Kathy, but also to the family who had gathered to celebrate everything their marriage had made possible.
John described the occasion beautifully:
“Áine turned a simple renewal of our vows into a moment we’ll treasure forever.”
That is the wonderful thing about a vow renewal.
It does not need to recreate your original wedding, and it does not need to compete with it.
There are no expectations about what it should look like, how many people should attend or which traditions must be followed.
It might be an intimate ceremony for two people during an Irish holiday.
It might bring children and grandchildren together to mark a special anniversary.
It might include new vows, memories from the original wedding, family readings, music, handfasting or an Irish blessing.
What matters is that it feels honest and meaningful to the people at its heart.

Perhaps the loveliest part of Sarah’s post came towards the end.
After watching her parents reaffirm their love in Ireland, she wrote:
“This whole experience honestly has Connor and me talking about getting married in Ireland one day. It was absolutely magical.”
— Sarah
One ceremony can sometimes hold more than one love story.
It can honour the marriage being celebrated while quietly inspiring another generation to imagine what their own Irish wedding might look like.
Ireland has a remarkable way of doing that.
The landscape, the welcome and the sense of history can transform a personal family occasion into something that stays with everyone who was present.

A family vow renewal in Ireland can become a beautiful part of a holiday, anniversary journey or return to a place that already holds special meaning.
You may already know exactly where you would like the ceremony to take place. It might be beside the Atlantic, in a garden, near a lake or in a peaceful location discovered during your travels.
You may simply know that you want to celebrate, without yet knowing what the ceremony should contain.
That is where our conversation begins.
I will take the time to learn about your life together and help create a ceremony that reflects:

Irish and Celtic traditions that can be included in a ceremony.
Whether you are travelling as a couple or bringing several generations of your family together, your vow renewal can be relaxed, personal and entirely your own.
John and Kathy’s ceremony was a celebration of far more than an anniversary.
It was a celebration of shared years, family memories and the decision to keep choosing one another.
To John, Kathy and their family, thank you for trusting me with such a meaningful occasion and for allowing me to share your generous words.
It was a genuine privilege to be part of a day that your family will carry with them long after returning home.
Whether you are planning a milestone anniversary, a family celebration or a private ceremony for two, I would be delighted to hear your story.
Together, we can create a personal vow renewal that feels warm, meaningful and true to the life you have shared.
With heartfelt thanks
Thank you to John, Kathy and Sarah for allowing me to share their experience.
